Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey have again launched a team for the upcoming “Pound the Pavement for Purple” 5K run/walk to be held in Neptune Township on Saturday, October 7th. This is the second year Houghtaling and Downey have hosted a team, and they are once again recruiting team members and donors, aiming to raise funds for the Lustgarten Foundation and pancreatic cancer research.
“Pound the Pavement for Purple was an event we first came up with while I was serving as Mayor of Neptune Township, and something we worked closely on with Freeholder Tom Arnone, the township, and other Monmouth County officials,” said Houghtaling (D-Monmouth), “It’s something I’m very proud of, how this committee came together so quickly, the dedicated volunteers we have that make this event happen, and all the support we received from the community. As an Assemblyman I want to do all I can to bring more attention and donations to this cause, because pancreatic cancer affects so many people right here in our community.”
In 2016, Houghtaling and Downey were successful in introducing and passing legislation that designates November of each year as “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in New Jersey.” Because pancreatic cancer is so difficult to detect early, most prognoses are deadly. Increased awareness of detection and treatment methods can help save lives. That legislation was ultimately signed into law by Governor Christie.
“We were so encouraged by the response to this event we got last year,” said Downey (D-Monmouth), “Last year over $42,000 was raised, and we look forward to hopefully breaking that record.”
Pound the Pavement for Purple will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2017. Registration begins at 8:30AM, and the 5K begins at 10:00AM. Those wishing to join Team Eric & Joann or donate to the cause can visit www.RunSignUp.com/EricAndJoann.
