Downey Bill to Prevent Individuals with Criminal Records from Officiating School Sporting Events Advanced by Assembly
Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Joann Downey to prevent individuals with criminal records from officiating interscholastic athletic events was advanced by the General Assembly Monday by a vote of 75-0-0.
“We have to be more mindful about who we allow around our children,” said Downey. “Requiring a criminal background check for these officials can help ensure that we are not blindly trusting our students with individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes.”

Houghtaling and Downey Legislation to Make Sure Taxpayers are Aware of Property Tax Relief Programs Advanced by Assembly
Legislation sponsored by Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey to help ensure that New Jersey taxpayers are well aware of the property tax relief programs available to them was advanced by the full Assembly on Thursday with a vote of 73-2-2.
“It’s no secret that New Jersey has one of the highest property tax rates in the country,” said Houghtaling. “But what may be a secret to many is that there are a number of tax relief programs that they might be eligible for. This bill will ensure that taxpayers are aware of the relief that is available.”
Downey Bill to Make NJ’s Family Leave Program More Accessible & Affordable to More Working Families Advanced by Assembly Panel
Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Joann Downey expanding New Jersey’s paid leave program and making it more accessible and affordable to more New Jerseyans was released Monday by the Assembly Budget Committee.
The bill (A-3975) would expand leave times, provide higher compensation to those taking leave, cover more family members, improve job protections and boost awareness of the program.
