Houghtaling & Downey Propose Commonsense Handgun Ammunition Regulations

A bill package sponsored by Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey would enact commonsense regulations on handgun ammunition purchases, including requiring photo identification for purchases and requiring electronic reporting of ammunition sales. The legislation is based on recommendations from the State of New Jersey Commission of Investigation follow-up report, issued in November of 2016, entitled “Armed and Dangerous -- Ten Years Later.”

Assembly Members Hosting Clothing Drive to Benefit Neptune Family

The office of Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey will be collecting clothing through October 11th, 2017 to benefit a local Neptune family.

On September 21, 2017, this family of 8 was displaced following a devastating fire that destroyed their home and most of their belongings, including much of their clothing. Houghtaling and Downey are encouraging local residents to help ease the family’s burden by donating their new or gently-used clothing.

Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey have again launched a team for the upcoming “Pound the Pavement for Purple” 5K run/walk to be held in Neptune Township on Saturday, October 7th. This is the second year Houghtaling and Downey have hosted a team, and they are once again recruiting team members and donors, aiming to raise funds for the Lustgarten Foundation and pancreatic cancer research.

OCEAN TWP -- In the wake of two devastating hurricanes in the past month, Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, Monmouth County Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey are renewing calls for Congress and the President to enact long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Houghtaling and Downey have sponsored a resolution urging members of Congress to ensure the protection of this vital program before its expiration date.

From the Assembly: Progress on women's equality continues

On August 26th, 2017, we were proud to celebrate National Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote.

However, even after the United States constitutionally expanded the right to vote, countless women were still disenfranchised and kept from voting. African-Americans were subjected to literacy tests and poll taxes, and many states even had laws on the books barring Native Americans from voting. The fight to end these laws and ensure all women were able to exercise their right to vote continued for decades.

Houghtaling & Downey Speak Out Against Trump's Atlantic Ocean Offshore Drilling Proposal

OCEAN TWP -- Monmouth County Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey, who represent several Jersey Shore towns including Asbury Park, Long Branch, and Neptune, spoke out this week against a proposal from the Trump Administration to open up oil and gas exploration off the Jersey shoreline. Local residents, public officials, and environmental advocates alike have voiced strong opposition to the proposal and similar proposals in the past, arguing that offshore drilling could cause irreversible damage to coastal communities and the state’s $44 billion tourism industry in the event of an oil spill.
