Monmouth County Residents, Volunteers, Local Officials Come Together to Raise $40,000 for Pancreatic Cancer Research

At the Third Annual Pound the Pavement for Purple 5K Run/Walk this weekend in Neptune Township, residents, volunteers, and local elected officials came together to raise nearly $40,000 for the Lustgarten Foundation, an organization that focuses on funding Pancreatic Cancer Research. The Pound the Pavement for Purple event was organized and hosted by the Township of Neptune and the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

From the Assembly: Working for a Safer New Jersey

This month we, alongside our Assembly colleagues, returned to the Legislature following a summer recess. The break gave us time to re-focus and brainstorm on what new legislation we want to propose and sponsor, and what issues are most important to our Monmouth County residents.

An issue that is always at the forefront for us and for so many residents and legislators is preserving the safety and security of our communities. With the impressive work of all involved in the capture of the New York/New Jersey bomber, and the stellar response of local law enforcement during those incidents, we are reminded that we must all we can to support our police officers by giving them the tools and knowledge they need to keep our residents safe.

Houghtaling and Downey Introduce Resolution to Honor Jewish Holidays Statewide

Following the beginning of Rosh Hashana this week, Monmouth County Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey have introduced a Joint Resolution that would honor the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Passover in the State of New Jersey.

Overhaul coming on NJ student loan forgiveness

After the death of a child, there is a list of grief-stricken tasks a parent must perform: notifying relatives, planning a burial, canceling credit cards. In the state of New Jersey, the list sometimes also includes continuing to pay student loans.

The latter obligation could soon end. A bill directing the state Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) to forgive NJCLASS student loans in the event of the borrower’s death has passed both houses of the Legislature. It will go to the governor once a tweaked version receives final Senate approval.

Houghtaling and Downey Sponsor Bill to Restrict Firearm Access for Domestic Violence Offenders

Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey have signed on to legislation that would enhance protections for domestic violence victims by restricting access to firearms for domestic violence offenders or those subject to a domestic violence restraining order. This is the latest of several common sense gun control bills that the pair have sponsored.
