Downey Bill to Combat Student Loan Debt in New Jersey Becomes Law


(TRENTON) -- Legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Downey to combat student loan debt in New Jersey by increasing transparency for the NJCLASS student loan program was signed into law on Monday. The new law (formerly bill A-4239) revises the NJ CLASS program to require that applicants first exhaust federal student loans, conduct income verification and limit total student loan amounts.

Houghtaling & Downey "Property Taxpayer Bill of Rights" Now Law


(TRENTON) Legislation sponsored by Assembly Democrats Eric Houghtaling, Joann Downey and Gabriela Mosquera to establish a Property Taxpayer Bill of Rights has been signed into law. 

The law (A-4007) requires the Director of the Division of Taxation to develop and publish a Property Taxpayer Bill of Rights that sets forth in simple and non-technical terms the right of every property taxpayer to understand their property assessment and to appeal an assessment that a taxpayer believes is too high.

OCEAN TWP -- Assemblywoman Joann Downey and Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling slammed Governor Christie on Friday following his absolute veto of their salary history bill. The legislation, aimed at closing the gender wage gap, would have prohibited employers from inquiring about or basing a proposed salary on an applicant’s salary history.
