This month we, alongside our Assembly colleagues, returned to the Legislature following a summer recess. The break gave us time to re-focus and brainstorm on what new legislation we want to propose and sponsor, and what issues are most important to our Monmouth County residents.
An issue that is always at the forefront for us and for so many residents and legislators is preserving the safety and security of our communities. With the impressive work of all involved in the capture of the New York/New Jersey bomber, and the stellar response of local law enforcement during those incidents, we are reminded that we must all we can to support our police officers by giving them the tools and knowledge they need to keep our residents safe.Read more
Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey have signed on to legislation that would enhance protections for domestic violence victims by restricting access to firearms for domestic violence offenders or those subject to a domestic violence restraining order. Houghtaling and Downey Introduce Original Gun Control Legislation to Require Micro-Stamping of All Newly Manufactured Guns
Freshman Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey introduced a piece of original legislation this past Thursday that would require all handguns sold in New Jersey to be micro-stamped. Micro-stamping is a laser technology that can engrave small identifying characters or letters on small objects. In this case, the cartridge cases of a handgun would be imprinted on when fired, enabling them to be traced to their firearm of origin. Houghtaling and Downey campaigned heavily on common-sense gun control prior to their election in November. Although this is not their first firearm-related bill, it is their first piece of original legislation addressing gun control.Read more

Monmouth County Assembly Members Eric Houghtaling and Joann Downey have signed on as sponsors of a bill that would require the notification and involvement of local law enforcement prior to the expungement of certain mental health records for those wishing to purchase firearms. A similar bill passed both houses of the Legislature with bipartisan support during the last legislative session, before being conditionally vetoed by Governor Chris Christie. An attempt to override the veto did succeed in the Senate, but ultimately failed in the General Assembly.Read more
