OCEAN TWP -- Senator-Elect Vin Gopal, Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling, and Assemblywoman Joann Downey released the following statement in response to news that the Trump Administration’s tax overhaul bill has received approval from the Senate Budget Committee:
“While Monmouth County residents are struggling to make ends meet due to ever-rising property taxes, the so-called ‘tax reform’ bill proposed by the Trump Administration would eliminate crucial tax breaks that benefit New Jerseyans. New Jersey residents already pay the highest property taxes in the country, and send far more to the federal government in taxes than we receive in benefits. But if the Trump administration get its way, middle-class families will be expected to come up with thousands more in taxes each year. This is simply unacceptable.
“Republicans in Congress have proposed eliminating State and Local Tax deductions, which would deal a devastating blow to Monmouth County families. According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, elimination of this deduction would lead to an increase in the average tax bill of more than $3,500 annually.
These numbers speak for themselves, and it is not an exaggeration to say this tax plan could force taxpayers out of their homes and out of New Jersey. We owe it to our constituents to fight this tax scam with everything we have, and we call on New Jersey’s Congressional delegation to reject what amounts to an immediate and devastating tax penalty imposed by the federal government.”
